K9 Track Overwatch with Thermal
In the early morning hours of today (05/17) we had a pursuit that led out of city limits and into Montana (15 miles). The driver fled on foot into the ditch/farmland. Our shift has a dual purpose K9 and initially the K9 was a possibility for a track to find the driver.
The K9 officer and I were discussing using the thermal drone to provide overwatch as the K9 officer and K9 tracked the suspect.
My inexperience in DFR led me to these questions.
What is the recommended or would you say preferred altitude to provide overwatch on a K9 track?
Is there a camera angle that best provides view of the K9 location as well as in front of the area where the K9 is located.
Any input is much appreciated.

Hey Jeff! We train and deploy regularly with K9 on tracking. In regards to camera positioning we typically like to keep the the K9 the back 1/3 of the frame. The “front” (or ahead) 2/3 we are looking for the suspect to pop out due to the audible of the K9 approaching and/or any civilian risk that may be abead. We fly at a safe altitude that allows us to do this and utilize the most appropriate pallets. Hope this helps.
